Linda Kay Tompkins, a beacon of love and joy within her family, passed away peacefully at her Viola home surrounded by her loved ones, on Monday, March 17, 2025, at the age of 74. She was born on Wednesday, November 8, 1950, in Rock Island, IL, the daughter of Louis Eugene and Doris Ilene Skinner Chandler.
Linda's life journey was one marked by dedication and enthusiasm. She built a fulfilling career with A.D. Huesing Bottling Works and Davenport Packing before retiring in 2015. Alongside her work, she was a past member of the Rock Island Moose Lodge No. 190.
A loving and funny soul, Linda's laughter was a hallmark of her personality, bringing light to the ordinary and extraordinary moments alike. Her relationships, particularly with her family, were paramount. As a cherished wife, she shared a beautiful bond with her husband, Jesse Tompkins whom she married on Saturday, September 1, 1973. Together, they navigated life's journey, creating enduring memories. Linda was a nurturing and inspiring presence to her sons, Jesse (Christine) Tompkins II of Matherville, IL, and Jeff Tompkins of Little York, IL; and her daughter, Tammy Connor of Virginia.
Linda's role as a grandmother was characterized by the same affection and guidance she imparted to her own children. She adored and was adored by her grandchildren, Ricky, Alexis, Rebeca, Jesse III, Richard, Gunnar, and Madduex Tompkins, as well as her seven great-grandchildren. Their lives are fuller and more joyful for having had her in their lives.
She is also survived by her brothers, Jeff Chandler of Milan, IL, and Roger Chandler of Moline, IL; and her sister, Nellie Penny of Colona, IL. Linda was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Richard, Chuck, Sam, Gary, Ronnie, Harold, and Joan.
Linda's interests painted a portrait of a woman who savored life's simple pleasures. Whether she was bowling strikes, calling out Bingo! with unrestrained excitement, or observing the flutter of hummingbirds in her yard, her zeal for these pastimes was evident. She could often be found outside tending to her chickens or cheering on her beloved St. Louis Cardinals, displaying the courage and ardor that were so characteristic of her.
Her courage was quietly robust, a strength that was never imposing but always present, guiding her family through life with love and resilience. Linda's lifetime of moments, from the laughter-filled to the daring, portrayed the essence of someone who lived heartily, who loved generously, and who faced each day with a readiness to embrace the joys it held.
Linda Kay Tompkins will be remembered not just for the activities that filled her hours, but more so for the warmth, the fun, and the courage that she brought to every room and every heart she encountered. Her legacy will forever be etched in the memories of those she touched, in the echoes of her laughter that resonate in their spirits, and in the kindness that she fostered within her family and community.
