Delmar L. Harmon, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at his home in Aledo, IL. He was born on Wednesday, March 5, 1941, in New Boston, IL, the son of Henry Abraham and Vivian Marie McCoy Harmon. He married Donna M. Hagan on July 18, 1963, in Aledo. Delmar's life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the joy that can be found in everyday moments.
Delmar's early years in New Boston were filled with the simple pleasures of small-town life. He grew into a man known for his humor and gentle nature, touching the lives of many with his kindness and warmth. Delmar's professional life was most recently spent as a dedicated auto parts salesman at Boney's Farm Store, where his friendly demeanor and expertise made him a favorite among customers and colleagues alike.
Family was the cornerstone of Delmar's life. He was a loving father to his daughters, Mitzi L. (Barry Eckermann) Harmon of Rock Island, IL and Deanna L. (Danny) Brown of Aledo, IL. His role as a grandfather to Justin Harmon, Ryanne Brown and Klarissa Eckermann, and as a great-grandfather to Draven Harmon, brought him immeasurable joy and pride. Delmar's sister, Mary Brasmer of Aledo, IL, will fondly remember her brother's memories and the special times they shared.
Delmar was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his wife Donna, his daughter Daphne Harmon, his brother Bob Harmon, and his sister Peggy Bruner. Their memories remained a guiding light throughout his life, inspiring him to live each day with gratitude and love.
A man of resilience and commitment, Delmar was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He would have celebrated 41 years of sobriety on October 25, 2024, a milestone that reflected his dedication to personal growth and helping others on their journey to recovery.
An avid sports fan, Delmar's enthusiasm for his favorite teams—the Cubs, Bears, and Illini—was infectious. He could often be heard cheering them on, his voice filled with excitement, hope and sometimes maybe a little frustration. Fishing was another of Delmar's passions, providing him with countless hours of tranquility and a connection to the natural world.
Delmar's legacy is one of laughter, kindness, and an unwavering spirit. His funny anecdotes and gentle presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As we remember Delmar, we celebrate a life well-lived, a heart full of love, and a soul that brought light into the lives of others.
In his passing, Delmar leaves behind a family that adores him, friends who respect him, and a community that was better for his presence. His memory will live on in the stories told, the lessons learned, and the love he gave so freely. Delmar L. Harmon's journey through life was a beautiful one, and though he will be greatly missed, the impact of his time here will continue to resonate for generations to come.
Delmar will be honored at a graveside ceremony, including Military Honors, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, at New Boston Cemetery. Family and friends will also gather to share their memories of Delmar from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Nichols Bewley Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Aledo.
