Gerald D. Brown, 84 of Muscatine, died Tuesday, Mar. 6, 2012, at Carrington Place in Muscatine.


Services will be 10:00 a.m. Sat. Mar. 10, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Muscatine. Burial will be in the Island Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the V.F. W. and American Legion combined squads.


Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Fri. Mar. 9, at Hillcrest Baptist Church.

He was born June 7, 1927 in Louisa County, IA, the son of George Edward and Pansy Bernice Almandinger Brown. He married Helen Lichtenwald in Muscatine on Jul. 19, 1947. She preceded him in death. He later married Verlee Eden Gipple in Whetstone, AZ. on Jan. 13, 1996.


Gerald's dad worked for the Corps of Engineers and as a kid he helped his dad light the channel lights on the Mississippi. Growing up along the Mississippi River, during the depression, Gerald became a lifelong hunter, trapper and fisherman. One of his favorite sayings was that you never went into the woods that you did not bring something back, whether it was food or wood for the fire.


He started working for Grain Processing Corporation in Nov. of 1944, as one of its first employees. He was employed there for over 45 years, and retired as an operations superintendent.


He was a U.S. Navy veteran during WWII and was stationed in San Diego and Guam.


He spent a lifetime helping people and he will be dearly missed by family and friends.


Survivors include his wife, Verlee; one sister, Pearl Beverlin and husband Eldon of Muscatine; one brother George and wife Emma of Whetstone, AZ; three daughters, Cindy Cross and husband Ron of East Moline, Connie Andrisevic and husband Dean of Lee's Summit, MO, and Karen Lorber and husband Gary of Letts; one son, Ray of Wapello; five grandchildren, Heth McKinney, Brian Cross, Rheannon Ehlers, Lindsey Lorber and Genevieve Meeker; and four great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death y his parents, wife Helen, two sisters, Gladys Ballenger and Mildred Kinsey; three brothers, Fred, Clarence and Milbourne; and one granddaughter, Amy Lorber.
