James W. Campbell, 91, of Keithsburg died on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at Mercer County Hospital.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Keithsburg. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial is in the Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the Keithsburg Fire Department. Bewley Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Aledo is assisting the family with arrangements.
James was born March 18, 1918 in Keithsburg, the son of James and Florence Smith Campbell. He married Alberta Tompkins on June 2, 1938 in Des Moines, IA. He was employed by the Corps of Engineers at Lock and Dam No. 18 in Gladstone as Lock Man. He was a Navy Veteran serving in World War II and two years in the South Pacific on the USS LST (No. 1028)
He was of Christian faith. He enjoyed gunsmithing, fishing, birds and squirrels.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife of 70 years, Alberta,; sons, Steve (Mary Lou) Campbell, Texas, David (Carolyn) Campbell, Little York, William (Diann) Campbell, Keithsburg, Daniel (Barb) Campbell, Hannibal, MO; daughters, Jamie (Ted) Greer, Joy, Sue (Rolf) Mitchell, Squim, Washington, Elsie Stotler, Oquawka; daughter-in-law, Erma Doss, Keithsburg; sisters-in-law, Audrey (Ben) Benischek, New Boston, Deanon (Elmer) Lilly, Viola; brother-in-law, Lloyd Tompkins, Keithsburg; 24 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elsie Norman and Anna Munson; son-in-law, Bill Stotler; brothers-in-law, Jack Tompkins, Larry Handway, Carl Norman and Ben Munson; sister-in-law, Imogene Tompkins; and infant son, Jimmy.
