James E. Qualls, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the age of 80, in his hometown of Muscatine, IA. Born on Friday, June 8, 1945, the son of Louis Edwin and Jean Louise Wilson Qualls, Jim's life was a testament to his dedication to his family, his work, and his passions.
Jim's early years were spent in Muscatine where he attended local schools and graduated from Muscatine High School in 1965. He was a familiar face in the community, known for his friendly demeanor and generous spirit. Following graduation, he married Barbara K. Butler on Sunday, June 27, 1965, at the Mulford Evangelical Church in Muscatine. They would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this month. Jim's career was marked by his role as a Machine Shop and Maintenance Foreman at North Star Steel, where he retired after many years of dedicated service. Prior to that, he had worked at Hon in the warehouse and in his early years at McKee Button Factory, showcasing his versatility and strong work ethic.
A devout Christian, Jim's faith was an integral part of his life. He lived his beliefs through his actions, always ready to lend a hand or share his skills with others. Jim's ability to fix anything was legendary.
Jim's interests were as varied as his talents. He had a passion for hot rods, spending countless hours working on and admiring these classic vehicles. His artistic side was expressed through drawing and painting, with a particular talent for creating beautiful murals that brought joy to all who saw them. Jim was also a regular at Sharpless Auctions, where he enjoyed the thrill of the hunt for unique finds. An avid reader, he could often be found with a book in hand, always eager to learn something new.
His generosity knew no bounds; Jim was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. This trait, along with his handy skills, made him a beloved figure. He was the embodiment of the phrase "a friend in need is a friend indeed."
Jim's family was the center of his world. He is survived by his loving wife, Barb, and their children, Debbie (Jason) Swift and Brad (Beth) Qualls, all of Muscatine. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Jared (Georgi) Swift, Brady Swift, Danielle (Luis) Shenk, Amanda (Chris) Meeks, Jamie (Kassidy) Qualls, Brandon (Dalia) Qualls, Sydney Weggen, and Mason Qualls, as well as his 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Jim also leaves behind his brother, Larry Qualls of Clinton, and sisters, Judy Beatty and Sandy (Mike) Waack, both of Muscatine. His parents and special grandmother, Clara Fagrelius, preceded him in death.
Jim's life was a beautiful mosaic of love and hard work. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and laughter shared by those who knew him. Jim's presence will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life will continue to be felt by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. As we say goodbye to James E. Qualls, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved.
