Richard E. Hunter, 81, former Mayor of Aledo, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015, at Trinity Rock Island.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Bewley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Aledo. Burial will be in the Aledo Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Aledo United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.bewleyfuneralhome.com.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 23, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born October 2, 1933, in Mercer County, Illinois, the son of David and Marian Douglas Hunter. He married Janet C. Swearingen on October 25, 1952, in Aledo.

He worked for Adams Plumbing from 1955 to 1965. He and Janet started Hunter Plumbing and Heating in 1965. They sold the business in 1984. He worked as the City of Rock Island Plumbing Inspector from 1984 to 1995 and retired from the city. He served as Mayor of the City of Aledo from 2009 to 2011.

He was a member of the Aledo United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Oakview Country Club, past president of the Jaycees, Democrat Precinct committeeman, and a City of Aledo Alderman . He was an avid golfer, and had three hole-in-one’s in his lifetime. He attended all of his grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts and activities.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Janet; daughters, Babette (Steve) Liby of New Windsor, IL, Cindy Hunter of Preemption, IL and Sherrie (John) Taylor of Jacksonville, IL.; seven grandchildren, Brandon Bruner, Benjamin (Christie) Bruner, Janson (Stephanie) Bender, Jacob Molburg, Alissa (fiance Ben Loos) Taylor, Aidan Hunter and step-grandson, Kevin Liby; five great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; siblings, Joan Stroud of Aledo, Helen (Bob) Warren of Hinsdale, IL, Mary (Jim) Simonds of Vicksburg, MI, and Delores (Steve) Johnson of Issaquah, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Hunter, one niece, Kristin Stroud and one granddaughter, Lindsay Beth Taylor.
