Choosing cremation does not limit how you can honor your loved one, it expands the possibilities. At Nichols Bewley, we provide dignified cremation options that offer families the ultimate flexibility in timing, location, and budget.
Whether you wish to hold a formal ceremony before the cremation takes place, plan a unique memorial celebration soon after or at a later date, our team handles every step of the process with the highest level of care and respect. We proudly serve families in Aledo, IL Muscatine, IA and the surrounding communities.
Our Cremation Options
Every family has different emotional, spiritual, and financial needs. We offer three primary paths for cremation, each fully customizable to your wishes.
A Traditional Funeral followed by Cremation
You do not have to choose between a traditional farewell and cremation. This option allows you to experience the comfort of time-honored visitation and services before the cremation process occurs.
- The Visitation: A gathering with an open or closed casket, allowing friends and family to pay their respects and offer mutual support.
- The Funeral Ceremony: A formal service held in our beautiful chapel or at your local church or place of worship.
- Ceremonial Caskets: We provide high-quality rental or ceremonial caskets specifically designed for services with cremation following.

Cremation followed by a Memorial Service or Celebration
A memorial service takes place after the cremation has occurred. Because there is no immediate timeline, this option gives your family extra time to gather distant relatives or plan a highly personalized event.
- Chapel or Off-Site Tributes: Held in our beautiful recently renovated chapel or a meaningful location of your choice.
- Urn as the Focal Point: The chosen urn is displayed beautifully as the focal point of the room, surrounded by floral arrangements, photographs, and cherished mementos.
- Meaningful Vignettes and Displays as the Focal Point: Some families prefer a celebration without the urn present. Memory tables, displays of mementos, and vignettes of items highlighting a hobby or other interest becomes the focal point of the tribute.
A Day-of-Tribute or
Memorial Visitation
Choosing cremation does not mean you have to forgo a gathering or farewell. Families can choose to hold an open casket viewing before cremation takes place or host a memorial visitation after the cremation.
- The Visitation & Viewing: A gathering with an open casket, allowing friends and family to pay their respects and offer mutual support.
- The Memorial Visitation: A gathering with or without the urn present, allowing friends and family to honor the loved one, share memories, offer mutual support.
- Ceremonial Caskets: We provide high-quality rental or ceremonial caskets specifically designed for viewings with cremation following.

Non-Ceremonial Cremation
For families seeking a minimal, private option without ceremonies or viewing.
- Dignified Care: Your loved one is brought into our care, the necessary paperwork is completed, permits are secured, and the cremation is performed.

The Nichols Bewley Cremation Pledge
We understand that entrusting a loved one to a cremation service provider requires absolute faith. To give your family complete peace of mind, we adhere to a strict, rigorous identification and tracking process:
- Identification: The identification of your loved one is established prior to transfer into our care. If death occurs at a hospital or other health care facility, I.D. bands are checked and identification is confirmed with the nursing staff. If death occurs at home or other location, identity is confirmed with the next-of-kin, responsible family member, medical examiner/coroner or other authority.
- Strict Identity Verification Throughout the Process: We utilize a secure dual-tagging and digital logging system that is placed at the time of transfer and remains with your loved one throughout the entire process, ensuring the ashes returned to you are those of your loved one.
- Continuous Safe Custody: Your loved one never leaves our system of care without detailed, documented tracking.
Urns, Keepsakes & Jewelry
From elegant bronze and marble urns to biodegradable options for water or earth scatterings. We also offer keepsakes and jewelry that holds a tiny portion of ashes.
Permanent Memorialization
An important part of the healing process is deciding on a permanent resting place or memorial for the cremated remains. We offer a wide selection of choices.
FAQ
Questions about cremation?
Is a casket required for direct cremation?
No. For direct cremations or memorial services, a traditional casket is not required. Both Illinois and Iowa State law do require an alternative, rigid, leak-resistant container (typically made of heavy corrugated board or unfinished wood) for the cremation process itself.
Can we have a traditional funeral if we choose cremation?
Yes. You can absolutely hold a traditional ceremony prior to the cremation process.
Can we still have a public viewing if we choose cremation?
Yes. You can absolutely hold a public or private viewing prior to the cremation process. We offer rental and ceremonial cremation caskets specifically designed for this purpose.
Can we still have military honors if we have cremation?
Absolutely. Veterans are entitled to full military honors regardless of whether they choose burial or cremation. We coordinate the presentation of the flag, the playing of Taps, and placement in a national veterans cemetery if desired.
Can multiple family members have a portion of the ashes?
Yes. Many families choose to divide the cremated remains among children or grandchildren using smaller keepsake urns or cremation jewelry, allowing everyone to keep a physical piece of their loved one close.
