Funeral Services

A time-honored way to celebrate a legacy

For generations, families have found comfort, healing, and solace in the structured framework of a traditional funeral. At Nichols Bewley, we specialize in crafting formal, dignified tributes that allow family, friends, and community to gather, support one another, and pay their final respects. Whether your vision includes a deeply religious ceremony at your local house of worship or a beautiful, non-denominational service in our chapel, our dedicated team guides you through every detail with absolute dignity and respect. We proudly serve families in Aledo, IL, Muscatine, IA and the surrounding areas.

The Elements of a Traditional Service

A traditional funeral typically consists of three meaningful components. We can customize each step to align with your family's personal preferences, culture, or faith traditions.

The Visitation or Viewing

Often held the afternoon or evening before the funeral ceremony (or immediately preceding it), the visitation offers a dedicated time for community support.

  • A Space to Share: Friends and family gather to share stories, offer condolences, and comfort one another in a structured environment.

  • Open or Closed Casket: You may choose an open-casket viewing to provide a sense of closure, or keep the casket closed based on your family’s comfort level.

  • Memory Displays: We encourage families to bring in personal photographs, cherished memorabilia, and custom music to fill the room with your loved one’s unique spirit.

The Funeral Ceremony

The ceremony serves as the formal tribute to a life well-lived. We seamlessly coordinate services in two primary settings:

  • Our Beautiful Chapel: Designed to provide a serene, peaceful atmosphere, our facility accommodates gatherings of all sizes. It is fully equipped with modern audio-visual systems for tribute videos and live-streaming services for distant guests.

  • Your Local Church or Place of Worship: If your loved one was deeply rooted in their faith, we work hand-in-hand with your clergy, priests, or spiritual leaders to ensure all religious rites, liturgies, and customs are perfectly honored.

The Committal or Graveside Service

Following the ceremony, a formal procession accompanies your loved one to their final resting place at the cemetery or mausoleum.

  • Final Farewell: A brief, meaningful gathering for final prayers, scripture readings, or a eulogy.

  • Military Honors: For those who served our country, we coordinate with military branches to provide flag-folding ceremonies, the playing of Taps, and official honor guards.

FAQ

Questions about funerals?

  • What is the difference between a church service and a chapel service?

A church service is a highly structured ceremony lead by clergy, priests or faith leaders. A chapel service can be a formal sturctured ceremony, a less formal srevice or a celebration.

  • Can we have a traditional funeral if we choose cremation?

Yes. This page focuses on the traditional casketed funeral service, but please note that you can absolutely hold a traditional viewing and ceremony using a rental or ceremonial casket prior to the cremation process. (Note: You can read more on our Cremation Services page by clicking here).

  • How long does a traditional funeral take to plan?

Typically, a traditional service is planned and executed within 3 to 5 days of a passing. Our directors handle all the heavy lifting—including permits, transportation, and coordination with clergy and cemeteries—so you can focus on your family.

  • Is it possible to customize my funeral service?

Definitely—we encourage personalization. A funeral is a tribute to a unique life, and every celebration should reflect that individuality.
